Arsene Wenger brands former club Arsenal the second best team in the Premier League behind Man City

Arsenal are ‘JUST behind Man City’ as the second-best team in the Premier League and ‘have a good chance’ to win the title if Pep Guardiola’s side focus on the Champions League, insists legendary former Gunners boss Arsene Wenger

  • Arsene Wenger thinks Arsenal are second favourites behind Manchester City
  • Mikel Arteta’s side have had a strong start to the season, and are one point clear
  • The Gunners legend thinks Arsenal’s chance may come if City focus on Europe
  • He also thinks they’re clear of Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs in the chasing pack

Arsene Wenger thinks Arsenal are the second favourites to win the Premier League this season behind Manchester City.

The Frenchman managed the Gunners from 1996 to 2018, and he has faith that Mikel Arteta’s men are well poised to win their first title since Wenger led the Londoners to top-flight glory in 2003-04.

Arsenal currently sit top of the table on 21 points, one point clear of Man City after their 6-3 victory at home to Man United on Sunday.

The 72-year-old told beIN SPORTS that he felt Arsenal were in a very strong position after a promising start to the new season, most recently capped by their own 3-1 derby day win over Spurs at the Emirates.

Wenger said: ‘Personally I would put them just behind City. The second best team to have a good chance to win the Premiership [sic]. Man City at some stage will focus highly on the Champions League.’

City’s European ambition is likely to be a key focus for Pep Guardiola’s side, and Wenger noted that it could open up a possible avenue for Arsenal to sneak in for domestic success for the first time in almost two decades.

However, he felt that Arsenal had shown enough to put them ahead of other contenders for the Premier League.

‘We don’t know about Liverpool, but they’re already 11 points behind,’ Wenger said. ’10 points behind Man City is a mountain to climb.

‘Chelsea doesn’t look consistent at the moment. They have not found the confidence to contend to win the league.’

He rounded off by laughing, as he said: ‘Tottenham by my DNA, I cannot be’, which earned the appreciation of fellow pundit, former Chelsea captain John Terry.

Arsenal’s own European run continues against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday, before hosting Liverpool in a crucial Premier League fixture next Sunday.

A win for the Gunners would move them 14 points clear of the Reds at this stage of the season, and further cement the form that Wenger believes makes them title contenders once again.
