CBI probes Pakistan connection in IPL 2019 Betting Racket


IPL 2022: The Central Investigation Bureau (CBI) has launched an investigation into a pan-India betting racket for trying to influence IPL 2019 matches. The CBI has lodged two FIRs, alleging that the racket had connections with a Pakistani national. Follow IPL 2022 Live Updates on InsideSport.IN.

“Reliable information has been received about a network of individuals involved in cricket betting influencing the outcome of Indian Premier League (IPL) matches based on inputs received from Pakistan. In the garb of betting related to IPL matches, they are cheating the general public by inducing them to bet,” CBI said in one of the First Information Reports (FIRs) obtained by Hindustan Times.

The individuals based out of Delhi, Jodhpur, Jaipur and Hyderabad, were inducing the public into placing bets on IPL matches. The CBI alleges that the racket was active since 2013 and 10 crore worth transactions had taken place. Dileep Kumar, Gurram Satish, and Gurram Vasu were named in the first FIR.

In the second FIR, CBI named a few unnamed government officials besides Sajjan Singh, Prabhu Lal Meena, Ram Avtar and Amit Kumar. They were allegedly involved in IPL betting since 2010 and had transactions worth 1 crore.

“For this purpose, they have opened bank accounts (mule accounts) using fake identities and know your customer documents (ID&KYC) in connivance with the unknown bank officials. These bank accounts have been opened by submitting forged details such as multiple dates of birth and without due diligence done by the bank officials,” the FIR said.

The CBI has lodged two cases of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery of the IPC (Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act.

Pakistan connection: What caught CBI’s attention was calls made to Pakistan national Waqas Malik. The bureau acquired the phone number of Malik during the initial investigation. The CBI also alleged that the money received was transferred to their associates in foreign countries through hawala transactions.

  • The agency has named 7 individuals besides few unnamed government servants.
  • In the first FIR, it is alleged that the racket had connections with a Pakistani national named Waqas Malik.
  • Transactions worth 11 Crore took place from those accounts.
  • The accused individuals used hawala transactions to transfer money abroad to their associates.

The CBI said that it is looking at a larger conspiracy in the matter.

This is not the first time that IPL has come under the scanner for betting. In 2013, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were banned for two years for alleged involvement in a betting scandal. Few cricketers including India pacer S Sreesanth were also suspended. However, Sreesanth was acquitted of the charges later.

The BCCI has also strengthened its Anti-Corruption Unit following the incident.
