Chelsea ‘interested in summer move for Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele on a free transfer’

Chelsea ‘interested in summer move for Ousmane Dembele on a free transfer and are looking at pre-contract agreement for Frenchman’ – after Barcelona winger’s deadline day move to PSG collapsed

  • Ousmane Dembele will stay at Barcelona until the end of this campaign
  • The Frenchman was told to sign a new Barcelona deal or look for another club
  • Joan Laporta revealed that an offer had been received from England’s top-flight
  • Chelsea were interested, and remain so with a view to a summer free transfer

Chelsea are reportedly still interested in signing Ousmane Dembele in the summer on a free transfer despite a late deadline day move failing to materialise.

The French winger was told by the Spanish giants to sign a new contract at the Nou Camp or find a new club in January, with his deal expiring in the summer.

Yet after a January move to PSG collapsed, Dembele will be staying in Catalonia until the summer but is allowed to sign a pre-contract agreement – with Sky Sports reporting Chelsea remain interested in the 24-year-old.

The report details that the Blues were interested in a deadline day deal, but a lack of time and financial obstacles always made a move unlikely.

Yet Thomas Tuchel – who coached Dembele at Borussia Dortmund – is still interested in bringing the exiled winger to Stamford Bridge this year.

Earlier in the window, Tuchel discussed Dembele’s situation at Barcelona and revealed his admiration for the player he worked with for a season in Germany.

‘I have no idea about his situation with Barca,’ said the Chelsea manager. ‘He is a very good player when he is in good shape. I was very lucky to train him at Dortmund. It only lasted a year but I wish it had been longer. I left and so did he.’

The Frenchman is staying at Barcelona despite Catalans president Joan Laporta – who set an asking price of £18m – revealing that an offer had been received from England’s top-flight.

‘Various solutions have been proposed,’ Laporta told Mundo Deportivo. ‘The last one depends on whether the player accepts it, it is to go to an English club.’

PSG, Tuchel’s former club, were discussing a move for Dembele but Financial Fair Play restrictions have meant the French giants have failed to find a solution to bringing in the France international.

As with other clubs that showed interest, a deal for Dembele – who earns £210,000 a a week at Barcelona – was only deemed feasible if they could offer players in exchange.

French winger Dembele has endured an injury-hit season at Barcelona this term and has just one goal in 11 appearances for the Catalans this term.

The 24-year-old has picked up knee and hamstring problems earlier the season which has limited to just six goalless LaLiga outings so far, but he did score 11 times for the Catalans last season.
