India T20 WC Squad: Deepak Chahar Injury: Mohammad Shami Fitness Test: While media reports emerged that Deepak Chahar had a twisted ankle, InsideSport understands that Deepak Chahar has also been struck with a back injury. But unlike last time, it’s not as bad. He has been advised rest and will have to pass a fitness test along with Mohammad Shami in order to fly to Australia for T20 World Cup. It should be noted that, both Shami and Chahar are in contention to replace the injured Jasprit Bumrah in WC main squad. If they clear the fitness test, they will fly to Australia along with the rest of the reserve squad on October 12-13. Follow IND vs SA LIVE & T20 World Cup LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.

“No, Deepak doesn’t have a twisted ankle. He has reported to NCA with a back problem. It’s not serious but since World Cup is priority, he was asked to visit the NCA. He will not be available for the ODIs,” a BCCI official told InsideSport.

However, Deepak Chahar isn’t the only one suffering a back injury. Bumrah was ruled out with a back injury. Deepak Hooda was at the NCA with a back injury. Arshdeep had a back injury in the recent past. Even Chahar suffered a back injury while recovering from a quadricep injury at the NCA. With too many back injuries, it has raised questions about India’s team of physios and state-of-the-art sports medicine centre at the NCA in Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, InsideSport understands that both Deepak Chahar and Mohammad Shami will have to clear fitness tests. Shami is also at the NCA after recovering from Covid-19. While he is technically not injured, he is undergoing rehab to regain full match-fitness. Shami struggled with Covid for over 10 days. Hence, he was asked to clear the cardiovascular test. As he has not been in action since the England tour, he will have to clear the fitness test before boarding the flight to Brisbane, Australia.

“Both Shami and Deepak have to clear the mandatory fitness test in order to be eligible for selection. Shami is at the NCA and will have his test this week. If everything goes fine with both, they will leave on October 12-13 with the rest of the guys,” the BCCI official said.
