England fans back Joe Root to SMASH batting records ‘with a smile on his face’

England fans back ‘unbelievable’ and ‘pivotal’ Joe Root to SMASH batting records ‘with a smile on his face’ after giving his ‘heart and soul’ to the captaincy

England fans have taken to social media to support Joe Root’s decision to step down as Test captain following a poor run of results that has seen the team win just once in their last 17 matches.

That has included five consecutive series defeats, most recently a 1-0 loss away to West Indies last month and another Ashes thrashing in Australia over the winter.

Root said: ‘After returning from the Caribbean tour and having time to reflect, I have decided to step down as England Men’s Test captain.

Joe Root has stepped down after a poor sequence of results including five straight losses

‘It has been the most challenging decision I have had to make in my career but having discussed this with my family and those closest to me; I know the timing is right.’

Cricket fans have taken to Twitter to react, with some claiming the 31-year-old was never the right person to lead England.

One fan has backed Root to break records and ‘smile again’, saying: ‘Having first met Joe Root when he was a teenager (and looked 8), I know how much of a cricket badger he is. He has given the England job his heart and soul.

‘But ultimately everyone has a shelf life. And time for Rooty to break Test batting records and smile again.’

A second fan mirrored similar views as he Tweeted:  ‘Still pivotal to our side. Clearly the best batsman by far. This decision should take a bit of the stress away from Root and may be able to perform even better. Whole squad needs a big shake up though, and changes needed to the domestic league to improve it’.

A third wrote: ‘Unbelievable player, shame it didn’t work out as captain but at least he can fully focus on what he does best.’

Another believes Root should not have been given the captaincy as he’s too ‘meek and not ruthless enough’.

He said: ‘Joe Root is a brilliant batsman on his day, but he was never captaincy material in a million years. Too meek, not ruthless enough, and he only ever seemed to speak in cliches.

‘The question now is, ‘who next?’. There really aren’t many viable candidates out there, for me.’

Those views were shared by another fan, who believes England’s fortunes will not turn around despite Root stepping down.

‘Absolutely nothing will change for England just because Root stepped down,’ he said.

Root, 31, was under intense pressure following England’s series defeat in the West Indies

Root was appointed as successor to Sir Alastair Cook in 2017, making early gains including an impressive 4-1 home series win over India in 2018.

A 3-1 away victory over South Africa in 2020 was another highlight, likewise a 2-0 victory in Sri Lanka early in 2021.

But since then England’s form has collapsed, placing heavy pressure on Root to step down.
