Chasing 203 to win, Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to a fast start with Abhishek Sharma scoring a quickfire 39, with able support from captain Kane Williamson, who chipped in as SRH raced to 50 in the first five overs. However, Mukesh Choudhary, guilty of dropping Abhishek earlier, bounced back to strike twice, dismissing both Sharma and in-form Rahul Tripathi off successive deliveries to reduce SRH to 58/2.

MS Dhoni then judiciously used his spinners as Williamson and Markram rebuilt, but the latter was dismissed further hurting SRH’s chances. The former meanwhile played a lone hand of 47 before being dismissed with Sunrisers needing 72 off the last five overs.

Shashank Singh and an injured Washington Sundar hardly made any contributions but Nicholas Pooran showcased his class as he kept SRH in the hunt. However, the target proved to be too much in the end with the Orange Army needing 38 off the final over. Pooran slammed 24 to get to his fifty and reduce the margin of defeat to protect their net run-rate.

Earlier, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway put on a staggering 182-run stand for the opening wicket as CSK hit the SRH attack to all parts of the ground. Washington Sundar’s injury compounded problems for Sunrisers, while Umran Malik had an off day as Gaikwad and Conway put on the best opening partnership against SRH in IPL history.

Gaikwad agonisingly fell on 99 off Natarajan, who also got MS Dhoni in the final over as CSK put on 202 on the board. Conway, playing only his second game, remained unbeaten on 85 off just 55 balls.
