  • However, Maguire has denied reports of tension between himself and Ronaldo

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has denied reports that there is friction between himself and Cristiano Ronaldo over the captain’s armband at Old Trafford.

It has been claimed that the pair are locked in a power struggle regarding who should skipper the side between now and the end of the season.

The United duo have, according to a report in The Mirror, been in conversation with interim boss Ralf Rangnick about the situation, with Maguire reluctant to hand over the armband for fear of losing it permanently.

However, Maguire has moved to play down talk of dressing room unrest at the club, insisting that it’s business as usual for the team as they prepare to face Leeds on Sunday.

Addressing The Mirror’s report, Maguire wrote on Friday morning on Twitter: ‘I’ve seen a lot of reports about this club that aren’t true and this is another. Not going to start posting about everything that is written but I needed to make this one clear. We’re united and focused on Sunday. Enjoy your day everyone.’

Maguire’s statement comes just hours after the report was published, detailing that there is now a growing belief in the dressing room that Ronaldo will take over as captain, while Maguire struggles for form at centre back.

A source explained: ‘Originally, Ronaldo was asking players to back Harry. But the problem is the manager now wants Ronaldo to mentor all these younger players.

‘That’s left Harry in no man’s land, as he’s the captain and having to say and follow whatever Ronaldo says, to keep everything sweet.’

Ronaldo has been mentoring the younger players – as per Rangnick’s instructions – since the German arrived in November.

Maguire, on the other hand, is said to feel ‘marginalised’ by Ronaldo’s role in the dressing room.

Ronaldo has, publicly, supported Maguire but that vocal backing is said to have lessened in recent weeks.

Maguire is not the first player to rubbish rumours of disharmony in the United squad this week.

On Tuesday, Marcus Rashford hit back at claims that he and Maguire were not happy with the way Ronaldo was influencing the team.

‘Are we just making it up as we go along now then? Please stop looking for divides,’ he wrote on Twitter.
