IND vs ZIM LIVE: IND vs ZIM 1st ODI – India coach VVS Laxman has opted to stick with Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan at the top of the order for the India vs Zimbabwe 1st ODI on Thursday. Gill and Dhawan had a fine partnership against West Indies in the Caribbean, and the duo were retained despite the return of KL Rahul. Rahul, named captain for the series, was expected to open to get some new ball practice ahead of the Asia Cup but eventually opted against the same. India captain KL Rahul was expected to open the batting on his return to the side as he prepares for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022. The 30-year-old is set to open with Rohit Sharma in the continental tournament and the Zimbabwe tour was set to give him some new ball practice. To accommodate the move, Shuibman Gill was set to slot into the middle order.

However, VVS Laxman decided against breaking up a set pair with Dhawan and Gill opening the batting. The duo put on two-century stands in the Caribbean with the latter winning the player of the series award for the same.

With a game against Pakistan set to begin India’s Asia Cup 2022 campaign, KL Rahul was expected to open the innings and get some practice with the new ball. The last time India faced Babar Azam’s side in the T20 World Cup, Rahul was cleaned up by an inswinging yorker by Shaheen Shah Afridi.

India will be keen to avoid a similar start and Rahul was hence added to their Zimbabwe tour just days before the team’s departure to Harare. However as captain, along with coach Laxman, Rahul opted to back Gill at the top of the order after his performances against the West Indies.
