“Most of them will come back after the third A Test but maybe a couple will be selected in the main squad and a few who will be net bowler,” the official told PTI.

Meanwhile, questions will be raised on Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara. The duo has been dismal over the last couple of years. The emergence of Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill have also led to a selection dilemma.

As per information available with InsideSport.IN, a final announcement could be made as early as next week as India will leave for SA next week.

After BCCI, CSA also confirmed India will play three Test matches on their tour which starts later this month but “under the strictest Covid-19 guidelines”.

The CSA added the tour will be delayed by a week to allow for “effective logistical planning” following an outbreak of the coronavirus Omicron variant in the host country.

India will also play three one-day internationals. The tour will be shortened, with four Twenty20 internationals being postponed until later in the year.

The first Test was due to start in Johannesburg on December 17 but the series is now likely to start in Centurion on December 26, with further Tests expected to be played in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

South Africa has praised India for its “solidarity” in not cancelling the tour amid the emergence of the new COVID variant Omicron. The Indian team will travel on a chartered flight and go straight into a bio-secure environment.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah have been invited by Cricket South Africa for the ‘Annual Nelson Mandela Dinner’ scheduled on January 2. However, it is still not certain whether the BCCI bigwigs will travel to the Rainbow Nation to attend the prestigious event following the emergence of the Omicron variant that has caused a spike in COVID-19 cases in the region.
