Jude Bellingham wore the captain’s armband for the first time for Borussia Dortmund today, in their 3-2 defeat to FC Koln.

The 19-year-old was handed the responsibility by Dortmund boss Edin Terzic after Mats Hummels and Marco Reus, the two usual captains, were both unavailable.

It continues the remarkable progress for the Englishman, who was named as the club’s third skipper at the start of the campaign.

Despite his side falling to defeat, Bellingham was proud of his own personal achievement as he posted a message on Twitter after the game.

Alongside an image of him leading his team out, he wrote: ‘Obviously very annoyed by the outcome of today’s game but what a special honour to captain this great club for the first time. No time to let our heads drop, many more chances to correct the mistakes of today in the next games. Heja BVB ‘

Since arriving at Signal Iduna Park from Birmingham City in 2020 for £25m, Bellingham has developed into a crucial player for the German side, already racking up 100 appearances for the club.

Having made his Bundesliga debut aged 17, Bellingham has also made the most appearances for an English teenager in the Champions League with 18.

His four goals in European’s elite competition is also the most goals scored by an English teenager.

He has also racked up 17 England caps, and established himself as part of Gareth Southgate’s first choice midfield over the previous international break.

The midfielder has been linked with a whole host of top European clubs ahead of a potential departure next summer.

Liverpool have been touted as favourites for his signature, but Bellingham is reportedly of interest to several other clubs including Real Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United. 

Following their defeat, Dortmund are fourth in the Bundesliga after eight games – though just two points off leaders Union Berlin.
