Leonardo has not given up hope on keeping Kylian Mbappe at Paris Saint-Germain beyond next summer, as the club’s sporting director hit out at Real Madrid for their efforts to prise the star away from France.
Mbappe, 22, has long been linked with a switch to the Bernabeu, with the Frenchman the subject of a £154million bid in the summer transfer window.
The striker has since confirmed that he asked PSG to allow him to leave for Madrid, and with his contract expiring next summer, with the Spaniards are hopeful they can finally land their man.

However, Leonardo maintains that the club are confident they can keep hold of Mbappe for next season, insisting that the World Cup winner is still their ‘jewel’.
‘Our idea is to extend Kylian Mbappé contract, Leonardo told Festival dello Sport via Fabrizio Romano.
‘Nothing has changed in our plans. Kylian is a jewel, he is incredibly perfect for PSG… then we’ve Kylian, Leo [Messi], Ney. We’ve never planned PSG future without Mbappé.’

Leonardo also took aim at Madrid for their dogged pursuit of Mbappe, claiming that they ‘must be punished’ for attempting to land the Frenchman on a free transfer.
‘From Madrid they deny, but I think Real Madrid have been doing a job to buy Mbappé [as a free agent] for a long time,’ he added. ‘For two years they have been speaking publicly about Mbappé. This must be be punished.’
Mbappe confirmed this week that he wanted to leave PSG midway through the summer to give the Ligue 1 giants time to source a ‘quality’ replacement.
The Brazilian also said Real Madrid ‘must be punished’ for their dogged pursuit of Mbappe
‘I asked to leave, because from the moment I did not want to extend, I wanted the club to have a transfer fee to have a quality replacement,’ Mbappe told RMC Sport.
‘It is a club which brought me a lot, I have always been happy, the four years that I spent here, and I still am.
‘I announced it early enough that the club can turn around. I wanted everyone to come out grown up, to leave hand in hand, to make a good deal, and I respected that. I said, ”if you don’t want me to leave, I will stay”.’
