According to Sport, Liverpool were willing to pay Gavi’s £43million release clause this summer but the midfielder intends to stay in Catalonia.

He will reportedly sign a new contract with a huge release clause of £857m, therefore ending the Reds’ chances of signing him.

It is claimed that Jurgen Klopp will now focus his attentions on signing Kalvin Phillips from Leeds, who is another long-term target.

The England international is also being monitored by Manchester City, who are on the hunt for a replacement for Fernandinho.

Phillips missed three months of last season with a hamstring injury, but he is still one of the most important players in Leeds’ squad and the Whites are likely to demand at least £60m for him.

The 26-year-old is in line to feature for England against Germany in Munich on Tuesday night and is desperate to get one over on the Three Lions’ old enemy.

‘We’d love to go there, win the game and not have to worry about us needing to beat them because of the history and stuff like that,’ Phillips told the Guardian. ‘But any time we come up against Germany, it’s going to be a big game.’
