Sunil Gavaskar Cricket Academy: After waiting for 33 years, Maharashtra Government takes back land allotted to Sunil Gavaskar for Cricket Academy
Sunil Gavaskar Cricket Academy: Why the Maharashtra Government decided on taking the land?
- The Sunil Gavaskar Cricket Foundation Trust (SGCFT) had acquired a land possession of the 21,348-square foot
- 33 years back during the late 1980s, the legendary cricketer wanted to set up an indoor cricket academy
- However, after waiting for a long now, Mhada had sent a proposal to take back the land allotted to Gavaskar in 2019
- A fresh appeal was made from housing minister Jitendra Awhad and Gavaskar had no option but to return the land
“Sunil Gavaskar has returned the land to Mhada. He has written a letter to chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and me stating that he can’t develop the cricket academy as planned so he is giving back the land,” Awhad said to Times of India
“Yes, the trust had returned the land to the government. My current work commitments and social welfare requirements are such that I wouldn’t be able to do justice to setting up the academy which was a dream of mine. Yes, of course, if Mhada wants to go ahead with the development on their own and require any inputs from me I would be happy to do so,” Gavaskar told TOI on behalf of SGCFT.
As things stand by, Awhad said the state was exploring different options to see how to develop the land. According to the report, the state government is likely to open a cricket training center on the land parcel.
