Man United: Fred Rutten REJECTS chance to join Erik ten Hag as the project makes him ‘UNCOMFORTABLE’

Ex-Holland midfielder Fred Rutten REJECTS the chance to join Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff at Man United because the project makes him feel ‘UNCOMFORTABLE’ – and will become a No 2 at Dutch side PSV instead

  • The former Holland midfielder said the project made him feel ‘uncomfortable’
  • Rutten, 59, will join Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s PSV as a coach next season instead

Former Holland midfielder Fred Rutten has turned down the chance to become an assistant at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag, claiming the project makes him feel ‘uncomfortable’.

Ajax boss ten Hag will take over from interim Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford this summer, and offered Rutten, who has led the likes of Schalke, PSV, and Feyenoord across a 20-year managerial career, the chance to become one of his assistants.

But the 59-year-old, via the Guardian, told Dutch TV that he wanted to stay in his home country to be close to his family.

He said: ‘Erik ten Hag has asked me to be his assistant at Manchester United. I said no.

‘Everyone makes his own choices in life. I have a family, I have grandchildren that I want to see. This type of project, I felt uncomfortable with it.

‘At Manchester United you get on a train and you can’t get off it. I want to feel comfortable in something you step into.

‘That is the case with PSV. It’s nice when you have grandchildren, who you see every now and then and who can play ball with.’

Rutten will instead move to Dutch side PSV, as an assistant to former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy, who will take over as manager there next season.

Former United No 2 and England boss Steve McClaren and ten Hag’s current assistant at Ajax, Mitchell van der Gaag, have been linked with joining ten Hag at the Red Devils as part of his backroom team.
