Man United: Graeme Souness claims ‘the clock is ticking’ on Erik ten Hag ALREADY

Graeme Souness claims ‘the clock is ticking’ on Erik ten Hag ALREADY after starting with back-to-back defeats at Man United… and he won’t rule out the under-fire boss getting the sack if Liverpool pile on the woe next week

  • Graeme Souness believes the pressure is on Erik ten Hag after just two matches
  • The pundit has not been impressed by the club’s transfer business this summer
  • Souness does not believe the Red Devils will improve on last season’s showing
  • Souness hints as big repercussions if United lose to Liverpool next week’s clash

Graeme Souness has warned Erik ten Hag the clock is already ticking on his tenure as Manchester United boss, despite only taking charge of two Premier League fixtures.

A good pre-season gave United fans renewed optimism ahead of the new campaign but two defeats from their opening two league fixtures have quickly re-opened last season’s wounds.

The Red Devils were resoundingly thrashed 4-0 at Brentford on Saturday, adding to their 2-1 defeat at home to Brighton on the opening day – leaving them bottom of the Premier League.

United endured their worst-ever Premier League campaign last term, finishing sixth and Souness sees nothing in the current squad to suggest they will improve this time round.

With transfer deadline day just over two weeks away, there is still time for the Dutchman to further bolster his squad. But the former Liverpool manager believes the pressure could already be mounting on the new United boss.

‘I think it’s a difficult time for Man United,’ Souness told talkSPORT. ‘I’m not sure with this group of players and this manager they are going to be any different to where they were last year.

‘The players they’ve brought in are not game changers for me. I think the clock is ticking on him already. That’s the nature of being Man United manager at this time.

‘They expect big things from him, he’s been successful at Ajax in what is a much inferior league to the Premier League.

‘The demands there are nothing like what he’s got on his shoulders in the Premier League and managing what is arguably the biggest club in the world.

Next up for Ten Hag is the visit of Liverpool to Old Trafford in what Souness believes could be a pivotal game for United.

Liverpool humiliated United 5-0 in the corresponding fixture last season and a repeat of a similiar score could have huge ramifications for the Dutchman.

When asked if there was a chance Ten Hag could be shown the door in the event of a damaging defeat next Monday night Souness replied: ‘Don’t be surprised by surprises in football.’
