After beginning his coaching career with a 1-0 series win over New Zealand, Rahul Dravid will now prepare for the South African test, with the three-match series kicking off on Boxing Day in Centurion. Dravid was the first Indian captain to win a Test match in South Africa and will hope to add a series honour against his name, helping Virat Kohli and Co. beat the Proteas at home.

However, in the build up to the contest, Rahul Dravid will face a barrage of burning questions from the press, particularly in regards to the team combination. In the absence of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, the balance of the side has lopsided, meaning that India could either opt for a 7+4 (7 batsman, 4 bowlers) or a 6+5 (6 batsman and five bowlers).

Either will have massive implications on the spots of middle-order trio Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari, who are in contention for a place in the XI. Should India opt for seven batsmen, two of the three could play, while a 6+5 combo will now leave room for one.

Ajinkya Rahane was sacked as vice-captain before the IND vs SA series, with Rohit Sharma promoted to the spot. In the absence of the Hit-Man, KL Rahul has been named Viar Kohli’s deputy, showing a clear sign that Rahane is not an untouchable player in the XI.  Both his competitors Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer have made their case, with Vihari scoring consecutive 50s in South Africa during the A tour, while Shreyas Iyer scored a century and a fifty on debut against New Zealand.
