Rio Ferdinand tells Manchester United to sign Marquinhos from PSG and Ronald Araujo from Barcelona after yet another fragile defensive display in the 3-2 victory over Tottenham
- Manchester United’s defenders have come under fire in the Premier League
- Only Southampton have conceded more than their 40 goals in the top 10
- However, Rio Ferdinand has already backed under fire Harry Maguire to step up
Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United need to sign two centre-backs in Marquinhos from PSG and Ronald Araujo from Barcelona to help improve their side ahead of next season.
United have endured a disappointing campaign, with hopes of even landing a top-four place looking bleak despite defeating Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at the weekend.
However, the win over their top four rivals featured glaring errors at the back including an own goal from skipper Harry Maguire.

United had signed Raphael Varane from Paris Saint-Germain over the summer to try and strengthen their back four, but Ferdinand claims the Red Devils will need to raid the French giants again for their captain Marquinhos as well as land Ronald Araujo from Barcelona to boost their back line.
‘I would sign Marquinhos,’ the former United defender said on Vibe with Five ‘[and] I would sign the Uruguayan at Barcelona [Araujo].’
United’s defence has come under severe criticism this term, first under previous boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and now under interim manager Ralf Rangnick.
Despite signing Raphael Varane (left) last summer, United’s defence has still proven leaky
Only Southampton inside the Premier League top 10 have conceded more than their 40 goals.
Club captain Maguire has come under fire in recent times in his back four role, but Ferdinand believes he needs some good fortune to fall in his favour to get him out of a run of poor form.
‘What’s killing him is it seems week after week something is questioning something about Harry Maguire and it’s quite glaring,’ he added.
Ferdinand believes Harry Maguire just needs some luck to improve his recent run of poor form
‘We’ve all been moments like this – in my career it happened. A lot of the time it’s luck.
‘He’s going through a period where everything you do there seems to be a problem, there’s a mistake.
‘Every mistake you make, it gets punished and highlighted. Sometimes – I went through moments in my career when I made mistakes but they didn’t score, or the keeper pulled me out of it – or Vidic made a tackle.
‘And that’s what happens in teams. It’s about rising that little bit of luck you need – and Harry Maguire needs that little bit of luck to get out of this little dip in form he is having right now.’
