In an interview with India Today, Sourav Ganguly ruled himself out of the race for the next ICC Chairman, suggesting that it was not in his hands. Ganguly is considered one of the favourites for the job, but it was Greg Barclay who was elected after agreeing to extend another term until 2024.

“See, these are all speculations. These are not right. This doesn’t happen so fast. These are all in BCCI’s and Government’s hands,” Ganguly added.

While the former Indian captain has distanced himself, for the time being, it is believed that the BCCI are keen to have a coveted post in world cricket for some time now. The richest cricket board in the world, BCCI are believed to want an Indian at the world body’s helm during that period. Sharad Pawar was in the ICC hot seat when India last hosted the World Cup in 2011.

With India set to host the next World Cup in 2023, BCCI are likely to root for one of their own to take up the top job at the International Cricket Council. Jay Shah is already at the helm of the Asian Cricket Council as Secretary. Naturally, the BCCI president would be the next in line should the board make the move.

Recently, the ICC announced the approval of the process to elect the next chairman of the world body in November. The election of the next chairman will be done simply by the majority to replace the incumbent Greg Barclay. BCCI has since maintained a wait and approach, suggesting it’s too early” to come to any conclusion.
