  • Leeds 0-1 Wolves
  • Newcastle 0-0 Nottm Forest
  • Tottenham 0-1 Southampton

“Afternoon Rob,” says Simon McMahon. “Today’s SPL games are Rangers v Kilmarnock, Ross County v Celtic, Aberdeen v St. Mirren and Motherwell v St. Johnstone. Just kicked off and no goals in any of the games yet. But enough of that. Europa Conference League third qualifying round first leg giant killers Dundee United are at home to Livingston tomorrow and will be assured of a rapturous welcome from the Tannadice faithful after Thursday night’s famous victory over AZ Alkmaar rekindled memories of European glory nights from the 1980s. The second leg is in Holland next week and I’m nervous already. Only five days to go…”

Leeds 0-1 Wolves Leeds have had a big penalty appeal rejected by VAR. The chaps on Sky Sports thought it was a clear foul by Jose Sa on Rasmus Kristensen; Stockley Park’s finest did not.

League One Burton’s first home game of the season is a study in the destruction of optimism. Having lost 3-0 at Wycombe last weekend, they’re already two goals and a man down at home to Bristol Rovers.

1:56 – Jefferson Lerma’s goal after 1 minute and 56 seconds is the quickest goal scored on MD1 by a newly promoted team in Premier League history. Founding.

GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 Southampton (Ward-Prowse 12)

If only we could hear Antonio Conte’s internal monologue right now. James Ward-Prowse, as reliable as oxygen, has put Southampton ahead, guiding an excellent volley past Hugo Lloris.

Championship Here’s more on that 1-1 draw between Norwich and Wigan at Carrow Road.

GOAL! Leeds 0-1 Wolves (Podence 6)

The new, adventurous Wolves are ahead at Elland Road. Neto and Hwang combine superbly to find Podence, who bounces his shot over Meslier.

GOAL! Bournemouth 1-0 Aston Villa (Lerma 3)

Crikey, what a start for Bournemouth on their return to the Premier League. Villa struggle to clear a corner, and Jefferson Lerma punishes them. One-nil!

Peeeeeeeeeeeeeep peeeeeeeeeeeeeep! For Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Leeds, Wolves, Newcastle, Nottm Forest, Spurs and Southampton, the 2022-23 season is under way.

The early game in the Championship finished Norwich 1-1 Wigan. James McClean gave newly promoted Wigan the lead at Carrow Road; Max Aarons equalised in the second half.

Fulham 2-2 Liverpool

Here’s John Brewin’s report on that thriller at Craven Cottage.

“For the first time in years, Tottenham are going into a Premier League with all eyes on the players, the manager and what they can do this season rather than moaning about what Daniel Levy is doing,” says Yash Gupta. “Being realistic I think the 86-point tally from the 2016/17 season can be reached. Optimistic me thinks an outside title challenge is possible. Nervous me thinks Son’s legs are about to fall off after Conte’s preseason.”

For that show of weakness, do another 50 shuttle runs.

Full time: Fulham 2-2 Liverpool

A cracking game ends all square. Fulham led twice through Aleksandar Mitrovic, but the substitute Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah equalised for Liverpool. Nunez knew very little about his goal or his assist for Salah, but his desire and movement definitely changed the game. He looks a right handful.

So, what’s new?

This is a fine piece on the exciting Leon Bailey, who starts for Villa at Bournemouth today.

GOAL! Fulham 2-2 Liverpool (Salah 80)

A second equaliser for Liverpool at Craven Cottage, this one from the inevitable Mo Salah. It’s a cracking game, which has around eight minutes to go.

There are 15 minutes remaining at Craven Cottage, where – would you believe it, Frank – Fulham lead Liverpool 2-1. Barry Glendenning has the latest.

Tottenham v Southampton team news

No new faces in the Spurs XI, though Ivan Perisic is one of five new faces on the bench. Richarlison isn’t among them; he’s suspended after misbehaving with a flare when Everton beat Chelsea last season.

Southampton’s team includes three summer signings: Gavin Bazunu, Joe Aribo and Romeo Lavia.

Newcastle v Nottm Forest team news

Nick Pope starts in goal for Newcastle, but the new centre-back Sven Botman is only on the bench.

The Forest team includes five debutants (I think): Neco Williams, Jesse Lingard, Moussa Niakhate, Harry Toffolo and Lewis O’Brien.

Leeds v Wolves team news

Brenden Aaronson, Tyler Adams, Marc Roca and Rasmus Kristensen are all in the Leeds team. Wolves include the exciting Irish centre-back Nathan Collins in their reshaped defence – it’s a back four, with no room for Conor Coady.

Bournemouth v Aston Villa team news

Marcus Tavernier, Bournemouth’s big summer signing, starts in midfield.

Villa include Diego Carlos and Boubacar Kamara, while Danny Ings is preferred to Ollie Watkins.
